Species Plantarum

Species Plantarum ("The Species of Plants") was first published in 1753, as a two-volume work by Carl Linnaeus. Its prime importance is perhaps that it is the primary starting point of plant nomenclature as it exists today. This means that the first names to be considered validly published in botany are those that appear in this book and his Genera Plantarum ed. 5 (1753). In the book Linnaeus listed all plants known to him, directly or from his extensive reading. The classification employed in the work allowed easy identification of plants, by placing every genus into an artificial class and order. By counting pistils and stamens, anybody, even without much knowledge of plants, was able to get to a listing of genera that the plant in question should belong to.Linnaeus gave a formal multiple-word description to each plant and an additional epithet to be used with the genus for easier reference, thus separating taxonomy from nomenclature. For example, the tomato was described (page 185) as SOLANUM caule inermi herbaceo foliis pinnatis incisis, racemis simplicibus. The given epithet was Lycopersicum. This was the first consistent use of naming structure for plants, and laid the basis for modern nomenclature. The binary name SOLANUM Lycopersicum (now rendered Solanum lycopersicum) very soon took over in usage because of its brevity, and the multiple-word definitions were no longer treated as formal names.

Romano Lavo-Lil

George Henry Borrow was a 19th century writer who wrote novels and travelogues based on his travels around Europe. Through his travels Borrow developed a close relationship with the Romani people, which play a prominent role in his books The Bible in Spain and Lavengro. Besides being a dictionary of the Romani language Borrow has included gypsy verse and songs, scripture and the Lords Prayer, gypsy names, fortune telling, and basic information about gypsies. The book begins, "The Gypsies of England call their language, as the Gypsies of many other countries call theirs, Romany or Romanes, a word either derived from the Indian Ram or Rama, which signifies a husband, or from the town Rome, which took its name either from the Indian Ram, or from the Gaulic word, Rom, which is nearly tantamount to husband or man, for as the Indian Ram means a husband or man, so does the Gaulic Pom signify that which constitutes a man and enables him to become a husband."

Varieties of English in Writing

This volume is concerned with assessing fictional and non-fictional written texts as linguistic evidence for earlier forms of varieties of English. These range from Scotland to New Zealand, from Canada to South Africa, covering all the major forms of the English language around the world. Central to the volume is the question of how genuine written representations are. Here the emphasis is on the techniques and methodology which can be employed when analysing documents. The vernacular styles found in written documents and the use of these as a window on earlier spoken modes of different varieties represent a focal concern of the book. Studies of language in literature, which were offered in the past, have been revisited and their findings reassessed in the light of recent advances in variationist linguistics.

The Syntax of Chinese

The past quarter of a century has seen a surge in Chinese syntactic research that has produced a sizeable literature on the analysis of almost every construction in Mandarin Chinese. This guide to Chinese syntax analyses the majority of constructions in Chinese that have featured in theoretical linguistics in the past 25 years, using the authors' own analyses as well as existing or potential alternative treatments. A broad variety of topics are covered, including categories, argument structure, passives and anaphora. The discussion of each topic sums up the key research results and provides new points of departure for further research. This book will be invaluable both to students wanting to know more about the grammar of Chinese, and graduate students and theoretical linguists interested in the universal principles that underlie human languages.

Michel Thomas Vocabulary Course

Learn another language the way you learnt your own You learnt your own language naturally and enjoyably: now you can learn Arabic in the same way. You'll stick with it because you'll love it * Use the unique method perfected over fifty years by the celebrated psychologist and linguist Michel Thomas. * This method works with your brain, helping you to build up your Arabic in manageable, enjoyable steps by thinking out the answers for yourself. * You learn through listening and speaking -- without the pressure of writing or memorising. * You pick up the language naturally and unforgettably. This much-anticipated Vocabulary Course carries forward the Michel Thomas teaching tradition and faithfully follows his unique approach to foreign language learning. The essential format is the same all-audio, building-block approach. The teacher teaches two students in the recording studio in real time and the student at home becomes the third member of the class. The native-speaker assistant teacher concentrates on helping get the pronunciation of sounds and words which are difficult for English-speakers just right. Learning vocabulary is notoriously difficult if attempted in the traditional way -- with long lists and hours of memorisation. However, with the Michel Thomas Method, new words and phrases are presented in such a way that they cannot be forgotten. They are interwoven with what has gone before so they are imprinted in your knowledge bank for ever. The vocabulary in the courses is carefully chosen from the relatively small number of 'power words' which open up an amazing range of expression and comprehension. Building and expanding on the language structures taught in the Foundation and Advanced Courses, these new Vocabulary Courses give you all you need to enjoy travelling in the Arabic-speaking world, be it for business or pleasure.

Language As Discourse

In this book Michael McCarthy and Ronald Carter describe the discoursal properties of language and demonstrate what insights this approach can offer to the student and teacher of language. The authors examine the relationship between complete texts, both spoken and written, and the social and cultural contexts in which they function. They argue that the functions of language are often best understood in a discoursal environment and that exploring language in context compels us to revise commonly-held understandings about the forms and meanings of language. In so doing, the authors argue the need for language teachers, syllabus planners and curriculum organisers to give greater attention to language as discourse.

Pronounce It Perfectly in English

This book is by far the better book to improve your pronunciation. After years trying all kinds of books, schools of English (for foreigners, of course), English teachers and a myriad of "teach yourself" methods, I finally found one that goes to the point. It teachs you in the easiest way, so clear and nice. It has draws of the mouth in order to show you the movement to make a perfect sound and it really works. The "usage tips" are really useful. Congratulations to the Author, Jean Yates. I have gone through this book and still reading it regularly to keep on my practice. It has really helped me to know the trick of American English pronounciation by properly controlling the tongue and mouth movement. The pictures given in this book are of tremendous help to me. I would have liked to see some more words in the pronounciation list. Anyway, this is one of the greatest book for mastering the pronounciation of English.

More Dialogs for Everyday Use

More Dialogs for Everyday Use contains thirty-six situation-based dialogs that present spoken American English in a natural way. The text is similar in instructional approach and format to Dialogs for Everyday Use, but includes longer conversational episodes. A photo is included with each dialogue to provide additional contextual support. This book also includes short language notes that focus on specific grammar points. This text is suggested for intermediate to high-intermediate learners of English. The Notes concentrate upon words and expressions that are either colloquial or idiomatic in nature. The dialogs themselves are kept short so that if teachers feel that memorization of the dialogs can be a part of the pedagogy of presentation, students will not have to face a seemingly insurmountable task of memorizing long passages. Memorization is encouraged since it often helps to develop both listening and reading comprehension.

Learning similar sentences will enable you to express the same thought in different ways, just like a native speaker of English. The more you practice, the more you improve your speaking skills. FRENCH FRAMMAR AND USAGE

Simply put, this really is the very best book on French I've ever come across, so much so that I bought it on the spot, which is something I very rarely do. It is well-organized, has wonderful examples, and has a particularly good section on adverbs. Although most grammars are simply grammars, I think this is a wonderful book for vocabulary expansion because of all the examples provided, and for the most part translations are provided for both phrases and individual words. It also has a very good index, which is always good in a book, especially so thorough a book. One of the best and most easily-overlooked conveniences is that the formal or colloquial usages are noted right alongside the rest rather than being put in seperate formal or colloquial chapters which would complicate things too much for the student.

Stonehenge

This new novel by Cornwell, author of the best-selling Sharpe series, is the epic tale of the construction of the famous megalithic temple. It is also the story of three quarrelsome brothers vying for leadership of their tribe: Lengar, the fierce warrior; Camaban, the maimed sorcerer-priest; and Saban, the compassionate hero. Each brother has a different idea of what is best for the people of Ratharryn, but it is Camaban's vision of a glorious temple to the sun god that fires their imagination. Saban must figure out how to build the enormous stone rings while protecting the people he loves from his brothers' obsessive behavior. Cornwell's work is rich in detail, but Stonehenge is slow paced and light on plot, while its characters seem one-dimensional. Suitable for public libraries where Cornwell is popular.

The German Language in a Changing Europe

Recent sociopolitical events have profoundly changed the status and functions of German and influenced its usage. In this textbook Michael Clyne revises and expands his original analysis of the German language in Language and Society in the German-Speaking Countries (CUP, 1984) in the light of such changes as the end of the Cold War, German unification, increasing European integration, and the changing self-images of Austria, Switzerland and Luxembourg. His wide-ranging exploration shows that the German-speaking countries all have problems or dilemmas concerning nationhood or ethnicity that are language-related and/or language-marked.

CryptoGraphics

CryptoGraphics: Exploiting Graphics Cards for Securityexplores the potential for implementing ciphers within GPUs, and describes the relevance of GPU-based encryption to the security of applications involving remote displays. As the processing power of GPUs increases, research involving the use of GPUs for general purpose computing has arisen. This work extends such research by considering the use of a GPU as a parallel processor for encrypting data. The authors evaluate the operations found in symmetric and asymmetric key ciphers to determine if encryption can be programmed in existing GPUs. A detailed description for a GPU based implementation of AES is provided. The feasibility of GPU-based encryption allows the authors to explore the use of a GPU as a trusted system component. Unencrypted display data can be confined to the GPU to avoid exposing it to any malware running on the operating system.

Community Literacy and the Rhetoric of Local Publics

Offering a comparative analysis of "community-literacy studies," COMMUNITY LITERACY AND THE RHETORIC OF LOCAL PUBLICS traces common values in diverse accounts of "ordinary people going public." Elenore Long offers a five-point theoretical framework. Used to review major community-literacy projects that have emerged in recent years, this local public framework uncovers profound differences, with significant consequence, within five formative perspectives: 1) the guiding metaphor behind such projects; 2) the context that defines a "local" public, shaping what is an effective, even possible performance, 3) the tenor and affective register of the discourse; 4) the literate practices that shape the discourse; and, most signficantly, 5) the nature of rhetorical invention or the generative process by which people in these accounts respond to exigencies, such as getting around gatekeepers, affirming identities, and speaking out with others across difference.

Arabic Second Language Acquisition of Morphosyntax

While the demand for Arabic classes and preparation programs for Arabic language teachers has increased, there is a notable gap in the field of linguistic research on learning Arabic as a second language. Arabic Second Language Acquisition of Morphosyntax presents a data-driven and systematic analysis of Arabic language acquisition that responds to this growing need. Based on large data samples collected from longitudinal and cross-sectional studies, this book explores a broad range of structures and acquisition issues. It also introduces new and comprehensive research, and it documents the successes and problems that native speakers of other languages, including English, Spanish, French, and Japanese, are likely to encounter in learning Arabic. By integrating previously published findings with new research, the author has created a unified and streamlined resource for teachers, teachers-in-training, linguists, Arabic textbook authors, and second-language acquisition experts.
