This book is the result of an International conference gathering the most recents results in this field. The studies on Biohydrogels have had a rapid, exponential evolution in the last decades. Starting from one of the first applications of hydrogels in surgery, polyvinylalcohol crosslinked with formaldehyde under the trade name of Ivalon, we passed through PolyHema hydrogels as contact lens materials, hydrophilic polyurethanes (HPU), biodegradable hydrogels for both reconstructive surgery and pharmaceutical delivery systems, and finally more recently, one decade old, the thermoreversible and transient network hydrogels. Of course all these classes of hydrogels have been always and continuously studied, improving their performance and field of applications. Recently, most of them have been used as scaffolds for cells, even stem ones, for regenerative applications (tissue engineering). Nevertheless hydrogels are odd materials and many studies still have to be carried out to fully understand their behaviour from mechanical, physicochemical and biological point of view.

Practical Nitriding and Ferritic Nitrocarburizing

The secret of the nitriding process is that it does not require a phase change from ferrite to austenite, nor does it require a further change from austenite to martensite. In other words, the steel remains in the ferrite phase (or cementite, depending on alloy composition) during the complete procedure. This means that the molecular structure of the ferrite (body-centered cubic, or bcc, lattice) does not change its configuration or grow into the face-centered cubic (fcc) lattice characteristic of austenite, as occurs in more conventional methods such as carburizing.

The International Congress on Membranes and Membrane Processes (ICOM) meetings are the most important events for the community of membrane science and technology. They are organized once every three years in the succession: Europe, Asia, America. The most recent ICOM2008 took place in Honolulu, Hawaii (USA). Nuclear Technologies in a Sustainable Energy System

The material is divided into six sections. Section One contains three papers that set the stage by addressing the broad aspects of the global energy problem and the pote ntial of nuclear technologies to contribute to its resolu tion. The first paper, by Hafele, begins with a summary of the IIASA global energy study, which analyzed both resource potentials, including those of nuclear fuels, and several quantitative scenarios, each of which balanced world energy demand with supply over the next 50 years. The next three sections of the book then address a variety of ways in which specific nuclear technologies can be arranged to produce energy and fuels in useful forms. Section Three focuses on fusion technologies and dense plasma neutron sources, possibilities either less near-term or richer in neutrons. And Section Four addresses accelerator breeding, a technology that is perhaps more remote, but characterized by a greater abundance of neutrons. In Section Five the focus shifts to the back end of the fuel cycle, and the fact that one of the key issues to be resolved when contemplating future nuclear strategies is how the waste should be handled. The final section, "Reflections and Summary", contains two items. First, there are the remarks presented on the second evening of the workshop by Freeman Dyson: in his marvelous way, he offers a perspective on the subject of the workshop from some important and compelling lessons of history.
