Small Satellites for Earth Observation

The 6th IAA Symposium on Small Satellites for Earth Observation, initiated by the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA), was again hosted by DLR, the German Aerospace Center. The participation of scientists, engineers, and managers from 24 countries reflected the high interest in the use of small satellites for dedicated missions applied to Earth observation. As in the previous symposia, the contributions showed that dedicated Earth observation missions cover a wide range of very different tasks. These missions provide increased opportunities for access to space and can be conducted relatively quickly and inexpensively. The spacecraft bus, the instruments, and the ground systems can be based either on optimized off-the-shelf systems with little or no requirements for new technology, or on new high-technology designs. Thus a new class of advanced small satellite missions, including autonomously-operating intelligent satellites and satellite constellations can be created, opening new fields of application for science and the public. The symposium provided 11 sessions for oral presentations and one poster session. Furthermore, in our 6th Symposium the Student Prize Paper Competition has been continued. The student papers have been evaluated by distinguished judges selected from academia, industry and government, coming from four continents. The finalists presented their papers in the Student Conference session.

Modelling the F4U Corsair

The F4U Corsair's combat career was longer than that of almost any other World War II fighter aircraft. Its success led to its service around the globe, and it was employed by the US Navy, British Fleet Air Arm and the Royal New Zealand Air Force. After the war, the Corsair also served with the French Navy, in various Latin American Air Forces, and with forces fighting in Korea. The International Space Station

This book will cover in great detail the newest construction and uses of the International Space Station. Part 6 will briefly look forward to the installation of the International Partners modules as well as the introduction of the European and Japanese robotic cargo vehicles. At the start of 1941 it had become abundantly clear to Hitler that he would have to provide some aid lor his Italian ally Mussolini, whose dreams of a Mediterranean empire were in danger of being shattered beyond repair, and It fell to the Luftwaffe to supply the first such assistance. During the previous October, the Italians had Invaded northwestern Greece, expecting a swift conquest. Instead the Greeks had resisted with spirit, counterattacking and driving the invaders back across the border into Albania (annexed by Italy In 1936). By the beginning of 1941, units of the Royal Air Force were present in Greece, raising the possibility of a major British thrust into the Balkans generally. This could prove a most dangerous threat to German plans for the forthcoming invasion of Russia, which at that time was envisaged to commence in the late spring. In December 1940 a reconnaissance in force across the Egyptian frontier by a small British force had turned into a full-scale offensive after achieving unexpectedly large initial gains.

Lufftwaffe fighter units Russia 1941-45

On the morning of 22 June 1941, the massive German invasion of Western Russia, Barbarossa, was spearheaded by deep armoured thrusts, designed to encircle and destroy large segments of the numerically strong Red Army. Overhead, providing immediate support and protection, flew the battle-hardened and highly-experienced units of the Luftwaffe, similar in composition, size and equipment to those used in western Europe and against Britain during 1940. Only amongst the Jagd-gesckwader (fighter units) had any substantial re-equipment taken place. Late in 1940 the first example of the Messerschrnirt Bfl09F had become available, and by June 1941, 13 of the Gruppen in the east had received these superb fighters considered by many to be the best of all the variants of the Bfl09 in terms of handling and response. Certainly it was of superior general performance to any opposition it would meet over Russia for many months to come. Indeed, the older Bfl09E which still equipped the remainder of the fighter force, was more than adequate to deal with the vast majority of Soviet aircraft it would meet initially particularly when in the hands of the very high quality pilots which most of the Jagdflieger were.

Luftwaffe night fighter units 1939-45

In common with other air forces of the period, the German Luftwaffe did Dot possess an organized night fighter force at the beginning of World War II; no specialized night fighter aircraft existed and those units that were engaged in the demanding art of nocturnal interception did so on an ad hoc basis, a situation that was to continue well into 1940. But that is not to say that the requirement for night fighting was totally overlooked; such was the confidence in German airpower being able to overcome all possible opposition in the early phases of the war, that it was estimated that the enemy would be forced to mount retaliatory operations only under cover of darkness. Hypersonics before the shuttle

It is a beginning. Over forty-five years have melapsed since the X-15 was conceived; 40 since it first flew. And 31 since the program ended. Although it is usually heralded as the most productive flight research program ever undertaken, no serious history has been assembled to capture its design, development, operations, and lessons. This monograph is the first step towards that history. Not that a great deal has not previously been written about the X-15, because it has. But most of it has been limited to specific aspects of the program; pilots stories, experiments, lessons-learned, etc. But with the exception of Robert S. Houstons history published by the Wright Air Development Center in 1958, and later included in the Air Force History Oftkes Hypersonic Revolution, no one has attempted to tell the entire story. And the WADC history is taken entirely from the Air Force perspective, with small mention of the other contributors.

Mach 3+

During the 1950s, American aircraft designers emphasized configurations that flew increasingly high and fast,a trend that continued for nearly two decades. Then, during the 1970s, efficiency, noise reduction, and fuel economy also became important considerations, in part because military analysts no longer deemed speed and altitude the paramount capabilities necessary to ensure national security.Among the aircraft designs that transitioned from paper to hardware during the high-speed era, the Lockheed Blackbirds hold a unique place. The A-12, YF-12A, M-21, D-21, and SR-71 variants outperformed all other jet airplanes in terms of altitude and speed. To this day, they remain the only production aircraft capable of sustained cruise in excess of Mach 3. Developed in utmost secrecy, they eventually became some of the worlds most famous aircraft.

The eclipse project

The Eclipse Project by Tom Tucker provides a readable narrative and a number of documents that record an important flight research effort at NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center. Carried out by Kelly Space and Technology, Inc., in partnership with the Air Force and Dryden at Edwards Air Force Base in the Mojave Desert of California, this project tested and gathered data about a potential newer and less expensive way to launch satellites into space. Whether the new technology comes into actual use will depend on funding, market forces, and other factors at least partly beyond the control of the participants in the project. This is a familiar situation in the history of flight research.

Flight research

The document by Milt Thompson that is reproduced here was an untitled rough draft found in Thompsons papers in the Dryden Historical Reference Collection. Internal evidence suggests that it was written about 1974. Readers need to keep this date in mind, since Milt writes in the present tense. Apparently, he never edited the document. Had he prepared it for publication, he would have done lots of editing and refined much of what he said.I have not attempted to second guess what Milt might have done in revising the paper, but I have made some minor stylistic changes to make it more readable without changing the sense of what Milt initially wrote.Where I have qualified what Milt said or added information for the readers benefit, I have done so either in footnotes or inside square brackets [like these]. The draft itself indicated that it should contain numerous figures to illustrate what he wrote, but no such figures were associated with the manuscript. I have searched out figures that appear to illustrate what Milt intended to show, but in some cases I have found none. When that has been the case, I have deleted his references to figures and simply kept his text, which does stand on its own.

Black Magic and Gremlins

This publication describes the development of the Flight Research Center Simulation Laboratory during the period from 1955 to 1975. These are the years in which analog computers were used as a major component of every flight simulation that was mechanized in support of the many different flight research projects at the High-Speed Flight Station (HSFSredesignated the Flight Research Center [FRC] in 1959 and the Dryden Flight Research Center [DFRC] in 1976). Initially, analog computers were used along with a ground-based cockpit for these simulators. This started in 1955. In 1964 a small scientific digital computer was bought and added to the X-15 simulator. This was the start of the hybrid (combined analog and digital) computer period of flight simulators. Both of these periods are covered in this document.

Touchdown

This monograph relates the important history of the Propulsion Controlled Aircraft project at NASAs Dryden Flight Research Center. Spurred by a number of airplane crashes caused by the loss of hydraulic flight controls, a NASA-industry team lead by Frank W. Burcham and C. Gordon Fullerton developed a way to land an aircraft safely using only engine thrust to control the airplane. In spite of initial skepticism, the team discovered that, by manually manipulating an airplanes thrust, there was adequate control for extended up-and-away flight. However, there was not adequate control precision for safe runway landings because of the small control forces, slow response, and difficulty in damping the airplane phugoid and Dutch roll oscillations. The team therefore conceived, developed, and tested the first computerized Propulsion Controlled Aircraft (PCA) system. The PCA system takes pilot commands, uses feedback from airplane measurements, and computes commands for the thrust of each engine, yielding much more precise control. Pitch rate and velocity feedback damp the phugoid oscillation, while yaw rate feedback damps the Dutch roll motion.

A History of Suction-Type Laminar-Flow Control with Emphasis on Flight Research

Laminar-flow control is an area of aeronautical research that has a long history at NASAs Langley Research Center, Dryden Flight Research Center, their predecessor organizations, and elsewhere. In this monograph, Albert L.Braslow, who spent much of his career at Langley working with this research, presents a history of that portion of laminar-flow technology known as active laminar-flow control, which employs suction of a small quantity of air through airplane surfaces. This important technique offers the potential for significant reduction in drag and, thereby, for large increases in range or reductions in fuel usage for aircraft. For transport aircraft, the reductions in fuel consumed as a result of laminar-flow control may equal 30 percent of present consumption. Given such potential, it is obvious that active laminar-flow control with suction is an important technology. In this study, Al covers the early history of the subject and brings the story all the way to the mid-1990s with an emphasis on flight research, much of which has occurred here at Dryden.This is an important monograph that not only encapsulates a lot of history in a brief compass but also does so in language that is accessible to non-technical readers. NASA is publishing it in a format that will enable it to reach the wide audience the subject deserves.

Airplane aerodynamics & performance

This book is based on a lecture course entitled The Principles of Jet Propulsion given by the author in 1943 and 1944, under the sponsorship of the University of California ESMWT program, to graduate engineers working in the aircraft companies located in the Los Angeles area.It was decided in preparing the original lecture notes to discuss basic principles only, and in order to conform with the wartime restrictions on security only unclassified material was included. Analyses of Aircraft Responses to Atmospheric Turbulence

When considering an input-output system such as an aircraft subjected to stochastic atmospheric turbulence, a major problem emerges. During flight tests, no practical difficulty arises measuring the aircraft-system's outputs, such as the angle-of-attack, the pitch-angle, the roll-angle, etc. However, a huge problem arises when the input to the aircraft-system is considered; this input is stochastic atmospheric turbulence in this thesis. Currently, it still remains extremely difficult to identify the entire flowfield around an aircraft's geometry subjected to a turbulent field of flow; an infinite amount of sensors would be required to identify the atmospheric turbulence velocity component's distribution (the input) over it. As a consequence, it is difficult, if not impossible, to identify atmospheric turbulence models from flight tests.

On Integrating Unmanned Aircraft Systems into the National Airspace System

Commercial interest for unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) has seen a steady increase over the last decade. Nevertheless, UAS operations have remained almost exclusively military. This is mainly due to the lack of a regulatory framework that allows only limited public and civil UAS operations with usually crippling restrictions. Although efforts from the Federal Aviation Administration and its partners are already underway to integrate UAS in the National Airspace System (NAS), the appropriate regulation will not be ready for several more years. In the meantime UAS developers need to be aware of the current operational restrictions, as well as make informed decisions on their research and development efforts so that their designs will be airworthy when the regulatory framework is in place.

Aircraft Design explores fixed winged aircraft design at the conceptual phase of a project. Aircraft Structures Second Edition

For a textbook aimed at undergraduate students, seniors to be specific, the three new major coverages must be assessed in the light of their relevance to the aircraft structures theme per se. A chapter on the fundamentals of three-dimensional elasticity theory can be justified, of course, but only if the subsequent structural analysis developments are carefully related to elasticity theory and departures therefrom as they unfold. There is little opportunity to do so, however, as only two of the nine chapters which follow contain topical material and illustrative examples different from the first edition, a masterful exposition of the stress and deflection analysis of trusses, space frameworks, and the built-up sheet- stringer or semjmonocoque construction so common to flight vehicle airframes for five decades now.The chapter on the finite element stiffness method is the significant new contribution to the book. Here a powerful and increasingly popular methodology is introduced to students, with the expertise of co-author Azar in this area obviously apparent.
