Time-Dependent Behaviour of Concrete Structures

Serviceability failures of concrete structures involving excessive cracking or deflection are relatively common, even in structures that comply with code requirements. This is often as a result of a failure to adequately account for the time-dependent deformations of concrete in the design of the structure. The serviceability provisions embodied in codes of practice are relatively crude and, in some situations, unreliable and do not adequately model the in-service behaviour of structures. In particular, they fail to adequately account for the effects of creep and shrinkage of the concrete. Design for serviceability is complicated by the non-linear and inelastic behaviour of concrete at service loads. It is thirty-eight years since the The Finite Element Method in Structural and Continuum Mechanics was first published. This book,which was the first dealing with the finite element method, provided the basis from which many further developments occurred.The expanding research and field of application of finite elements led to the second edition in 1971, the third in 1977, the fourth as two volumes in 1989 and 1991 and the fifth as three volumes in 2000. The size of each of these editions expanded geometrically (from 272 pages in 1967 to the fifth edition of 1482 pages). This was necessary to do justice to a rapidly expanding field of professional application and research. Even so, much filtering of the contents was necessary to keep these editions within reasonable bounds. In the present edition the authors retain the three volume format of the fifth edition but have decided not to pursue having three contiguous volumes rather they treat the wholework as an assembly of three separate works. Each one is capable of being used without the others and each one appeals perhaps to a different audience. Though naturally they recommend the use of the whole ensemble to people wishing to devote much of their time and study to the finite element method.

Efflorescence and the discoloration of concrete

Disfigurement of any concrete surface is at least a source of annoyance, and this publication attempts to mitigate the problem in its chemical and physical aspects. It deals with the broad scope of elemental attack by the vagaries of weather and by salts as they move to the face of a building to result in discoloration and, at times, disruption. Experimental and Theoretical Investigations of Steel-Fibrous Concrete

Concrete is still the most widely used construction material since it has the lowest ratio between cost and strength as compared to other available materials. However, it has two undesirable properties, namely: low tensile strength and large brittleness that cause the collapse to occur shortly after the formation of the first crack. To improve these two negative properties and to achieve a partial substitute of conventional reinforcement, an addition of short discontinuous randomly oriented steel fibres can be practiced among others. In spite of positive properties, fibrous concrete did not find such acknowledgment and application as usual concrete. There do not still exist consistent dimensioning rules due to the lack sufficient large-scale static and dynamic experiments taking into account the effect of the fibre orientation. The intention of the book is twofold: first to summarize the most important mechanical and physical properties of steel-fibre-added concrete and reinforced concrete on the basis of numerous experiments described in the scientific literature, and second to describe a quasi-static fracture process at meso-scale both in plain concrete and fibrous concrete using a novel discrete lattice model. In 2D and 3D simulations of fibrous concrete specimens under uniaxial tension, the effect of the fibre volume, fibre distribution, fibre orientation, fibre length, fibrous bond strength and specimen size on both the stress-strain curve and fracture process was carefully analyzed.

Drinking water distribution systems

The distribution system is a critical component of every drinking water utility. Its primary function is to provide the required water quantity and quality at a suitable pressure, and failure to do so is a serious system deficiency. Water quality may degrade during distribution because of the way water is treated or not treated before it is distributed, chemical and biological reactions that take place in the water during distribution, reactions between the water and distribution system materials, and contamination from external sources that occurs because of main breaks, leaks coupled with hydraulic transients, and improperly maintained storage facilities, among other things. Furthermore, special problems are posed by the utilitys need to maintain suitable water quality at the consumers tap, and the quality changes that occur in consumers plumbing, which is not owned or controlled by the utility.
