Tunelling and Tunnel Mechanics: A Rational Approach to Tunnelling

The book covers not only practical aspects but also the underlying theoretical approaches. It also covers the fundamentals of rock mechanics. It addresses not only students but also professionals who are interested to understand the underlying principles and methods and possibly to further develop them. Emphasis is given to the mechanical approach rather than to hardly tractable empirical statements. The text is concise and as far as possible complete and comprises a large list of citations. Publications of the English and German speaking scientific communities have been taken into account.

Fluid Mechanics: Problems and Solutions

Fluid mechanicsis the study offluidsand theforceson them. (Fluids includeliquids, gases, andplasmas.) Fluid mechanics can be divided into fluid kinematics, the study of fluid motion, andfluid dynamics, the study of the effect of forces on fluid motion, which can further be divided intofluid statics, the study of fluids at rest, and fluid kinetics, the study of fluids in motion. It is a branch ofcontinuum mechanics, a subject which models matter without using the information that it is made out of atoms, that is, it models matter from a macroscopic viewpoint rather than from a microscopic viewpoint. Fluid mechanics, especially fluid dynamics, is an active field of research with many unsolved or partly solved problems. Fluid mechanics can be mathematically complex. Sometimes it can best be solved bynumerical methods, typically using computers. A modern discipline, calledcomputational fluid dynamics(CFD), is devoted to this approach to solving fluid mechanics problems. Also taking advantage of the highly visual nature of fluid flow isparticle image velocimetry, an experimental method for visualizing and analyzing fluid flow.

Fundamentals of Residential Construction 3rd edition

Complete, authoritative coverage of residential construction materials and procedures.Fundamentals of Residential Construction offers a complete, comprehensive presentation of todays residential construction systems, from foundation to roof and from exterior finishes to interior details, including all mechanical and electrical systems. It features the same lucid, straightforward writing, clear drawings, and extensive photographic illustrations that have made its parent book, Fundamentals of Building Construction, a bestseller. Wood light frame construction, the system by which most houses in North America are built, is emphasized. Industrialized systems of construction and alternative residential construction systems are also covered. The authors first provide a view of the context within which residential construction takes place, including zoning ordinances, building codes, financing, environmental concerns, and a look at the roles of the various professionals who work to produce housing of all types. Following chapters on materials, the chapters on wood light frame construction examine everything from rough sitework, foundations, and framing to plumbing, heating and cooling, wiring, interior and exterior finishing, and, finally, finish sitework. The final portion of the book on alternative construction systems offers detailed explanations of currently popular options such as timber frame, log, rammed earth, straw bale, insulating concrete form, light-gauge steel frame, and panelized construction.

Labour Conditions for Construction

The book presents and discusses the challenges and potential of local authorities to promote decent work in construction. It combines theoretical analysis and case-studies, with recommendations to both practitioners and academics.Existing literature on decent work focuses mainly on the roles and responsibilities of actors in the private sector but the contribution of actors and institutions in the public sector must not be ignored. Local authorities play a crucial role in economic development through a range of policies and programmes in the construction sector and related services, e.g. utilities. This book includes a methodology that combines quantitative and qualitative information and data. It defines and validates a set of criteria to evaluate the capacity of local authorities, combining criteria about decent work, the construction sector (and related services), and the policies and programmes of the local authority in each case study city.

Sustainability of Concrete

Production of Portland cement is responsible for about seven percent of the worlds greenhouse gas emissions. The pressure to make the production of concrete more sustainable, or "greener", is considerable and increasing. This requires a wholesale shift in processes, materials and methods in the concrete industry. Pure Portland cement will need to be replaced by more complex binary, tertiary or even quaternary binders, including other types of cementitious materials. We can expect an increasing use of high performance concrete, primarily because of its high sustainability and durability. Much more attention will have to be paid to the proper curing of the concrete if we want to improve its life expectancy. Presenting the latest advances in the science of concrete this book focuses particularly on sustainability, durability, and economy. It explores the potential for increased sustainability in concrete from the initial mixing right through to its behaviour in complex structures exposed to different types of loads and aggressive environments.

Water, Sanitary and Waste Services for Buildings Fifth Edition

Water, sanitary and waste services represent a substantial proportion of the cost of construction, averaging 10% of the capital costs of building and with continuing costs in operation and maintenance. Nevertheless, they are often regarded as a 'Cinderella' within the building process. Parts of many different codes and regulations impact on these services, making an overall viewpoint more difficult to get. This new edition of this classic text draws together material from a variety of sources to provide the comprehensive coverage not available elsewhere. It is a resource for the sound design, operation and maintenance of these services and should be on the bookshelf of every building services engineer and architect.

Formwork for Concrete Structures

This book is written for architects, engineers, and constructors who are responsible for designing and/or building formwork and temporary structures during the construction process. It is also designed to serve either as a textbook for a course in timber and formwork design or as a reference for systematic self-study of the subject.A new chapter on the design of wood members for formwork and temporary structures has been added to this edition. Numerous example problems have been added throughout the text to illustrate practical applications for calculating loads, stresses, and designing members. New summary tables have been added to assist the reader in understanding the concepts and techniques of designing formwork and temporary structures. This fourth edition has been developed with the latest structural design recommendations by the National Design Specification (NDS 2005), published by the American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA). In writing this edition, an effort has been made to conform to the intent of this reference document. The material presented is suggested as a guide only, and final responsibility lies with the designer of formwork and temporary structures. Many patented systems and commercial accessories are available to increase the speed and safety of erecting formwork. Numerous figures and photographs are presented to introduce the reader to the available forming systems for walls, columns, beams, and slabs.

Design of Reinforced Masonry Structures

Over the years, reinforced masonry has evolved as a new engineering material of construction that is used all over the United States and many foreign countries. Although the use of unreinforced masonry materials dates back to some 4000 BC, reinforced masonry has evolved into a standard building material in the United States for structures up to 3 stories and in Mexico up to seven stories. The author includes appropriate theory for design and construction methods and prevailing codes and specifications required by the industry.
