Automotive Engineering

The current automotive industry faces numerous challenges, including increased global competition, more stringent environmental and safety requirements, the need for higher performance vehicles, and reducing costs. The materials used in automotive engineering play key roles in overcoming these issues. Automotive Engineering: Lightweight, Functional, and Novel Materials focuses on both existing materials and future developments in automotive science and technology. Divided into four sections, the book first describes the development of future vehicles, aluminum alloys for manufacturing lighter body panels, and various polymer composites for stronger module carriers. It then reviews state-of-the-art functional materials and smart technologies and projects in which application areas they will most impact future automotive designs and manufacturing. The next section considers the difficulties that must be overcome for light alloys to displace ferrous-based materials and the increasing competition from lightweight polymeric-based composites. The final section explores newer processing and manufacturing technologies, including welding and joining, titanium alloys, and durable, high-performance composites. With contributions from internationally recognized experts, this volume provides a comprehensive overview of cutting-edge automotive materials and technologies. It will help you understand the key materials and engineering concerns currently confronting this industry.

A Field Guide To Automotive Technology

Adult/High SchoolIn the format used in three previous field guides, Sobey once again provides easily digestible explanations of everyday things that are often taken for granted. In straightforward, nontechnical, often witty prose, he helps readers identify items on, inside, and under the car, as well as under the hood, and explains what they do and why. He also painlessly reviews a few principles of science and mechanics here and there. The 130 entries range from basic to complex, from bumper and windshield to differential and constant velocity joint boot. They are all accompanied by serviceable black-and-white photos to help readers identify the items under discussion. Perhaps the most enjoyable feature of the book is the inclusion of interesting facts for most of the entries. For example, at the end of the brief discussion concerning speedometers, readers are told that the first speeding ticket was given in 1896 to a driver in Great Britain who was guilty of zooming along at eight miles per hour in a two-mile-an-hour zone. Most of the material concerns passenger vehicles, but there are also sections on off-road vehicles, motorcycles, buses, and human-powered conveyances.

Semi-active Suspension Control

The fundamental goals of a car suspension are the isolation of the vehicle from the road and the improvement of road holding by means of a spring-type element and a damper. The inherent limitations of classical suspensions have motivated the investigation of controlled suspension systems, both semi-active and active. In a semi-active suspension the damper is generally replaced by a controlled dissipative element and no energy is introduced into the system. In contrast, an active suspension requires the use of a fully active actuator, and a significant energy input is generally required. Due to their higher reliability, lower cost and comparable performance semi-active suspensions have gained wide acceptance throughout the automotive engineering community. This book provides an overview of vehicle ride control employing smart semiactive damping systems. In this context the term smart refers to the ability to modify the control logic in response to measured vehicle ride and handling indicators.
